On this day in 1909, 66 Jewish families gathered on a desolate sand dune to parcel out the land by lottery using seashells. This humble ceremony marked the beginning of Tel Aviv, the first modern Jewish city built in Israel. Tel Aviv has blossomed into a world-class city and business center of Israel.
