Built on the remains of a 4th century Byzantine basilica and a small 12th century Crusader chapel, the Church of All Nations was consecrated in June 1924. The original Byzantine basilica was destroyed by an earthquake in 746. In 1920, during work on the foundations, a column was found two meters beneath the floor of the medieval Crusader chapel. Fragments of a magnificent mosaic were also found. The earlier church was fully excavated, and you can see the remains built into the current church. Inside, the bedrock is believed to be a place where Jesus prayed. Using funds from many different countries, the Church of all Nations received its name from the unified efforts of Christians around the world. The doors and altar are open to people of any denomination, despite the church being held in trust by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land.
