Legend tells us that the builder of the current Old City walls, Ottoman Sultan Suleiman, had a dream that lions would devour him for not defending Jerusalem, and therefore carved the fierce animals into the stones of this gate. According to some Christian traditions, this gate was the location where the martyr Stephen was stoned to death, as recorded in Acts chapter 7.
