Dead Sea Scrolls on Sale

After the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls by young Bedouin shepherds in 1947, four of the seven scrolls were sold to Syrian Archbishop Samuel. He smuggled them out of the country and relocated them to a Syrian Church in New Jersey. On this day in 1954, Samuel placed an advertisement for the four scrolls in the Wall Street Journal. They were eventually purchased back by the State of Israel.
